Position Paper

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

A MUN Position Paper, also known as Policy/Topic Paper, is a document that is a summary of your country's position toward a specific topic. They are generally due before a conference. Position Papers are usually 1-2 pages per topic. Keep in mind, they are not always required by every conference. A good Position Paper will show that you have a deep understanding of the topic, your country’s experience with the topic and the policies your country would want to see implemented to handle the issue. They have 4 sections: Background of Topic, Past International Actions, Country Policy, and Possible Solutions.

Here are some examples:

Section 1: Background of Topic:

This consists of the introduction of your essay, where you should focus on your topic and its significance, while also explaining background information including its history.

Section 2: Past International Actions:

This section consists of a summary of the past actions regarding your topic along with the outcomes of those actions.

Section 3: Country Policy:

This is a paragraph stating your country's policy towards the issue at hand.

Section 4: Possible Solutions:

This section is where you can come up with your own possible solutions to the problem at hand. This can be based on actions which they have already done.
